My First Experience Photographing Fire Spinners

Posted by Brian Beard | Stories | 0 comments |

I think there are some awesome things that can be done with light trails, whether from cars in traffic, steel wool spinning, or just plain-old fire twirlers. But I had no idea whether it would work with an iPhone, and I hadn't seen any information about it (or hadn't looked, either one). So when I found out there would be fire twirling at First Fridays in April (FF is a monthly art festival in Richmond), I knew I...

Chasing a Sunset Didn’t Work Out Today

Posted by Brian Beard | Stories | 0 comments |

The weather today was beautiful, and it may very well have (finally) been the first day post-winter! For most of the day, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and it was warm enough to ride my bike without a jacket of any kind. As late afternoon came along, a few white clouds appeared here and there, which got me excited about the potential for an awesome sunset. Erin and I made our way to my...

Snowy Richmond

Posted by Brian Beard | Galleries | 0 comments |

I love to get one good snow each winter. It keeps things interesting (especially if it's going to be cold anyway), and a city under snow is just different. This year, we had snow on three separate occasions, which was a little more than I'd like. But, it did allow me to capture some photos that I otherwise wouldn't have in all different parts of Richmond.

Richmond, Virginia

Posted by Brian Beard | Galleries | 0 comments |

Richmond is my home base, and has a lot more to offer than one might think. Between a riverside skyline, hilltop views, old railroad tracks, and more, there’s plenty to show off in pictures. I look forward to finding new places to take photos, and will continue to add to this gallery.

Getting Up Early For A One-Of-A-Kind Sunrise

Posted by Brian Beard | Stories | 0 comments |

I'm not one to get up early if I don't have to. That's not to say I will lay in bed all day, but rare is the day when I'm up in time to see the sunrise. It's hard to find the motivation to get out for something so early, when there'll be another one the next day. But this week, I found myself looking at the forecast of an overnight snowstorm and wondering how the...

Step by Step Image: Lake Eola Turtles

Posted by Brian Beard | Tips and How-To's | 0 comments |

During a visit to Florida over the holidays, I went with Erin and my family to downtown Orlando and Lake Eola. Like any lake in Florida, there's an abundance of wildlife, and it gave me the opportunity to use a new smartphone photography tool - my selfie stick (though I didn't use it for a selfie in this case). The turtles in this photo were sunning themselves on a rock about 2 feet or so...

When I first started taking photos with my phone, I often held the phone upright, in portrait orientation, without giving it a second thought. (more…)

2015 Goals

Posted by Brian Beard | Stories | 0 comments |

With a new year come new goals! I have a few (admittedly basic) goals as I really start getting more serious about iPhone photography. So, no further introduction is needed, I think. Here they are! 1. Improve my long-exposure abilities. Some of the photographs I admire the most are long exposures. With long-exposure, you can create awesome waterfall and ocean shots, and do some cool things with moving light. To date, most of my long-exposure...

Step-by-Step: How I Created This Photo

Posted by Brian Beard | Tips and How-To's | 0 comments |

Sometimes you have to create the scene that you want, and that was the case with this photo. I really wanted a silhouetted subject to contrast with the bright colors of the ocean, but I didn't have enough time to wait for someone to walk by on their own. So, I got some help. First, take a look the beach, as it appeared when we (Erin and I) arrived: Pretty, but the shot is missing something....
