My First Experience Photographing Fire Spinners

My First Experience Photographing Fire Spinners

I think there are some awesome things that can be done with light trails, whether from cars in traffic, steel wool spinning, or just plain-old fire twirlers. But I had no idea whether it would work with an iPhone, and I hadn't seen any information about it (or hadn't looked, either one). So when I found out there would be fire twirling at First Fridays in April (FF is a monthly art festival in Richmond), I knew I...

Chasing a Sunset Didn’t Work Out Today

Chasing a Sunset Didn’t Work Out Today

The weather today was beautiful, and it may very well have (finally) been the first day post-winter! For most of the day, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and it was warm enough to ride my bike without a jacket of any kind. As late afternoon came along, a few white clouds appeared here and there, which got me excited about the potential for an awesome sunset. Erin and I made our way to my...

Getting Up Early For A One-Of-A-Kind Sunrise

Getting Up Early For A One-Of-A-Kind Sunrise

I'm not one to get up early if I don't have to. That's not to say I will lay in bed all day, but rare is the day when I'm up in time to see the sunrise. It's hard to find the motivation to get out for something so early, when there'll be another one the next day. But this week, I found myself looking at the forecast of an overnight snowstorm and wondering how the...

2015 Goals

2015 Goals

With a new year come new goals! I have a few (admittedly basic) goals as I really start getting more serious about iPhone photography. So, no further introduction is needed, I think. Here they are! 1. Improve my long-exposure abilities. Some of the photographs I admire the most are long exposures. With long-exposure, you can create awesome waterfall and ocean shots, and do some cool things with moving light. To date, most of my long-exposure...

Nominated for Trover’s Best of 2014 List!

Nominated for Trover’s Best of 2014 List!

Not really a post, but some exciting news: one of my photos from Lauterbrunnen was nominated for Trover's Best of 2014 List! I'm still trying to figure out how it happened, and whether it's a big deal or not, but it's really awesome that someone liked my photo enough to choose it from out of so many submissions (I don't know how many photos are on Trover - millions, maybe?). Only 45 images were chosen...

A Surprising View On Crowders Mountain

On the drive home from Thanksgiving, Erin and I decided to stretch our legs with a short hike in Crowders Mountain State Park in North Carolina. We'd heard from a friend that it was easy to access...

Practicing Long-Exposure Shots at Toccoa Falls

Practicing Long-Exposure Shots at Toccoa Falls

Ever see professional shots of waterfalls, where the water is nice and smooth, and wonder, "How do they do that?" Well, a technique called long-exposure is how they do it.

Two-Day Appalachian Trail Hike

Two-Day Appalachian Trail Hike

During my first stint in Richmond, VA, I didn't spend much time in the Shenandoah National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains, or any of the beautiful parks in Virginia. Not this time.
